ITINERARIES FOR WALKING TOURS 

Route from El Arenal to the Sanctuary of San Pedro de Alcantara (Arenas de San Pedro)
This is a beautiful walk that crosses the El Tiemblo Bridge, reaches the Cross of la Tendera and from there descends via El Barranco and the Arroyo de la Avellaneda arriving at the Sanctuary of San Pedro Alcantara. The Sanctuary dates from the XVIII centuary and is by by Ventura Rodriguez and is located in an old hermitage and Franciscan convent.

Route from El Nogal del Barranco to La Mira
This route starts from the Plataforma de El Nogal del Barranco, 4 km from the town of Guisando. It crosses, by the Rio Pelayos, via a mule track up to La Apretura. From here one is at the foot of the wonderful peaks of Los Galayos. The climb is very steep and passes the Victory refuge (1.975 m) towards Los Pelaos and La Mira. (2.343 m).

Route from El Arenal to Puerto de el Arenal
Itinerary of 5 km starting at el Collado de La Centenera taking the track north to a small stone refuge on el Collado Alto de la Campanas. From here one follows the stone track to the Pass, which geographically divides the Gredos peaks (1.830 m). This old mule track used to be an important commercial interchange.

  • Duration: 2 hours from the Puerto de La Centenera

Route from LO ALTO (El Arenal) to the Puerto de la Cabrilla
This 4.5 km route crosses from El Arenal to the river that divides the southern and northern sides of Gredos, going through an old natural pass between both peaks, at 1.950 m of altitude.

Route from la Plataforma de Domingo Fernando to the Puerto del Peon
From El Hornillo one arrives at the plataforma de Mingo Fernando via the forest road of la Francisca. The route is 8 km and crosses through pines and white brooms, through an old cattle grazing valley which historically used to join the two peaks. On the climb one enjoys an amazing view behind Los Galayos and the Seca and Reseca streams. By the El Puerto del Peon (2.051 m) there is an interesting granate rock called Risco Perido. To the north there is a magnificent view of La Covacha.

Los Galayos route
Alto La Centenera-Los Giraldos-La Gallina-El Nogal del Barranco-Refugio Victory.Recently signposted, this is an amazing route surrounded by pine trees which for some 16 km, runs along the southern hillside from the Sierra de El Arenal up to Los Galayos passing above LO ALTO Centre and by the valleys and the gorge of El Hornillo and Guisando.

  • Duration: 9 hours for the entire tour.
  • From LO ALTO as a starting platform: 7 hours
  • Difficulty: medium-high

NOTE: some of the above routes cannot be done during the winter months.

Made up of the Villa de Mombeltran (where you can visit the parque de la Soledad and the Castle of D. Beltran), Cuevas del Valle, Villarejo, San Esteban and Santa Cruz.

Tourist route via la Vera
Very well preserved towns with very interesting architecture. You are advised to go as far as the Monastery of Yuste where Carlos V lived out his final years.
